Aryan Stedman
Barrister, Head of Legal Practice
Immigration
With over 25 years of experience in immigration and human rights law, Aryan began his career at 9 King’s Bench Walk where he worked in independent practice until 2008. He has successfully represented hundreds of individuals before Tribunals and Courts across England and Wales. In 2003, he co-authored an immigration textbook for legal practitioners, further cementing his expertise in the field.
Aryan spent the next decade mostly working as a Judge in the Social Entitlement Chamber until he decided he wanted to return to the court work and advocacy. In 2021, Aryan joined Imperium Chambers and expanded his practice to include Family and Child Law - an area in which he is deeply passionate. Over recent years, he has built an extensive client base, representing individuals directly in Family Courts across the country through the direct access scheme.
Aryan remains a door tenant at Imperium Chambers and continues to accept instructions from both solicitors and direct access clients in immigration and family law matters.
Immigration Judge
In 2018, Aryan was appointed as a fee-paid Judge of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber, where he regularly presides over cases at the Hatton Cross hearing centre. His work involves handling a broad spectrum of immigration appeals, including deportation, asylum, human rights claims, and bail hearings.
Family and Child Law
Aryan handles the full range of private family law matters, including conducting fact-finding and final hearings, as well as obtaining non-molestation and occupation orders. He is also experienced in matrimonial finance hearings and has handled appeals, including those to the Court of Appeal, in both private and public law cases. His growing client base, primarily through word-of-mouth referrals, is a testament to his dedication and success in this area.
Aryan is an active member of the Family Law Bar Association (FLBA).
Tribunal Judge of the Family Court
In 2023, Aryan was appointed as a Tribunal Judge of the Family Court, where he presides over private children law cases in the South East. He is scheduled to begin sitting in the Autumn of 2024.
Direct Public Access – Litigation and Representation
While Aryan continues to receive instructions from solicitors, his primary work comes from the direct public access scheme, which allows him to offer legal advice and representation directly to clients from the start to the conclusion of their case. This seamless approach fosters a strong professional relationship and ensures continuity of care. Aryan also explores alternatives to court proceedings, such as negotiated settlements and mediation, providing clients with efficient and cost-effective solutions.
Aryan is authorised by the Bar Council to undertake litigation, which essentially means he is permitted to do the work a Solicitor would normally be instructed to do.
‘Birthrights’ Trainer
Aryan serves as an associate legal trainer for Birthrights, a charity dedicated to protecting the rights of women and birthing people during pregnancy and childbirth. He has recently begun delivering training sessions at hospitals across the South of England.
Pro Bono Work
Aryan is registered with Advocate and will consider free representation for an appropriate case in the higher courts depending on his availability.
